The Wonders of Entrepreneurship

One of my marketing teachers once said that blogs and diaries are usually kept by self-obsessed people, or indeed megalomaniacs. In my case, it's just that I prefer keeping my memories online than on a paper diary. Partly because I type faster than I write (and it looks nicer), but also because I hid my diary so well that I can't find it. The number of visitors on blogs has been increasing a lot over the past months, which proves that people like gossip, especially when it involves other people's misfortunes.

So that's why I chose to keep this diary online! Just thought I'd explain my choice, in case it made me look lazy. I'm not lazy, I'm just creative.

Whenever I have exams or deadlines coming up I tend to start thinking about backup plans in case uni goes terribly wrong. I work really hard, but I think that's just a way of procrastinating - let's be honest, we all do it. My current backup plan is to be a crepe seller in Paris (I'd probably be my own best customer though). So I started thinking about how I could advertise my crepe empire and here's the best idea I came up with:

Oh, and I found out this week, while eating and apple, which was later confirmed while out for a romantic meal with my other half, that I have Frey's syndrome. Now that's just what I needed before exam season! No amount of Mocha Mulattas, Morello Cherry and Vanilla Daiquiris, Martinis, or any other yummy cocktails can take away the emotional anguish I feel right now. And for once, sadly, I am not being sarcastic.

Ok, so Jimmy mentioned this in the lecture and that we didn't really have time to map out our networking line in uni, but I do have time now so here's a little list of people I could use to get places:

*To start with, family and friends, they'll always be there for me

*Nuno Valente (Everton player, I was his children's interpreter for a while when they moved over here)

*My tattooists, they know me and the story behind all my tattoos

*The restaurant owners in The Italian Kitchen, Valparaiso and Algarve, all dad's mates

*My boyfriend works for the HMRC, and my dad's friend is a big boss there

*Portia, my hairdresser for many years, she always gives me a discount

*My bank manager, who keeps telling me I can't have a bigger overdraft - wise man.

*All the lawyers at JST Lawyers, I worked there and they'll get me out of trouble should I ever end up in court, which is highly unlikely since I'm such a nice person

*Lyndell W., I met her on a forum for people who had tumours on their parotid glands, she lives in California and would help me out if I needed anything while I was there

*My mom's great uncle was a very famous writer, I'm sure I can throw that in and it'll come in useful, in Portugal only though.

*And most recently, Fall Out Boy. I met them last night at their gig, so surely that counts!

That's about it for now, I'm sure I'll think of some more people and come back to update this.

I decided that, being Easter and having two weeks at home (working, not having fun as such!), I'd take the time to better myself - my own little rehab, if you will. So I got up, had breakfast and went for a walk in the park. Popped into the shop to get a magazine on the way, and the mail man stank of sweat. Carried on walking, got to the park entrance and there were two scary looking men walking out, and a mafia looking man shouting on his phone in a very threatening voice. Didn't see another soul, so carried on walking. Ah, the kids playground, guards nearby! Lovely, I thought, find a bench and sit down. First bench, there's a psycopath biting his nails like mental. Second bench, there's a tramp sleeping on it. Third bench, too close to these two weirdos. Next bench, covered in yoghurt. Next, seems ok, in the middle of the field with the sun shining. So I sat down, then a couple walked past with their two pitbulls, I could feel one of them staring at me but I made no eye contact. Ten minutes later the wind was so cold that I had to get up and walk again. Finally, near home, there were three pitbulls playing in the front yard and trying really hard to get out the gate, probably to eat me. This time I really thought it was the end of me, but thankfully I got home safe.

Clearly, students are meant to be fat and unhealthy and going against this will bring severe consequences.

And so is the gym. Or anywhere packed with students, really. I had to walk up and down the library for an hour until someone decided to leave, and I ran for the computer like a crazy woman, in my head shouting "It's miiiiiiine!!!"

I'm tired. Not just tired as in I haven't slept much because there's too much work to do, but tired as in fed up and mentally tired; and right now my stamina is close to non-existant. The summer holidays are approaching but just thinking about next year, and how hard and exhausting it's gonna be, makes me wanna flee to Paris and become a crepe seller, or a writer. Writing is my first passion, marketing is my backup plan because let's face it, writing can be a very hard career and I appreciate my little luxuries. I try really hard and I feel lucky to be at uni, I just hope all this hard work will be worth it when I get my grades.

I'm ready to go home now. Reaaally wish I could.

Another one of those commercial holidays, an opportunity for companies to make millions off the public. It's not that I refuse to give in and buy my mom a present, it's just that this time I am incredibly skint - I hate that part of being a student! So I went out and bought lots of little things myself and made her breakfast in bed with croissants, marmalade, cappuccino, wafer sticks, juice, and flowers (tulips, apparently, which I didn't know until she said "the tulips smell gorgeous"). I'm glad she liked the thoughtful gesture, sometimes people forget you love them so it's nice to remind them every now and then.

Hope you're having a good time in America Jimmy, I'm not jealous at all!

In today's lecture Jimmy mentioned that teachers should connect with students to make the most of the teaching/learning experience. I couldn't agree more; and I really hate it when teachers treat pupils like soldiers in school, I mean, no one ever did anything better by having someone screaming in their ear and humiliating them in front of everyone. Take my parents for example; when my mom used to take me driving ("used to" as in she's too scared after the 50mph u-turn incident) she was patient and told me slowly step by step what to do. My dad, on the other hand, slapped my leg and yelled "the clutch Monica, the clutch!!!" every time I let the car die. The subjects I'm good at are the ones where the teacher is good and makes learning as pleasant an experience as possible. I don't want to mention names, but there are lecturers I want to punch in the face - we're adults, we're here because we want to and we're paying a lot of money for our education, we don't want to be treated with less respect than we deserve.

Anyway, time to go home, been in the library for a long time (extra brownie points for me!).

It's funny how when I decided to make the effort to get a job, I was actually asked for interviews. Today I had another one and the place is near my house, which means that it is too close to get public transport but too far to walk. So I decided to get a taxi there to avoid a repeat of crazy-looking-lady at a previous interview. The manager knows my friends because they work there and the interview went really well. On the way home I thought I'd jump on the first taxi that drove past but to my delight none did until I was round the corner from my house, which means that I walked miles in stilettos..."Why would you wear stilettos to an interview, Monica?", one might ask. Good question, and for once I can justify my actions; I'm short and being taller makes me feel more confident, which is necessary at job interviews. Then, to make my day just a little bit better, I noticed I didn't have my house keys and started to panic when I remembered that no one else would be in until the evening. I couldn't bare the thought of walking anymore, so I popped into the McDonald's in the corner because sadly it was the only place where I could use the toilet, eat and rest. Have I mentioned that I'm a vegetarian? The last time I went to McDonald's was nearly a year ago after I had an operation, I could hardly open my mouth so the thought of a BigMac was very appealing, obviously. Anyway, after texting everyone my mom finally got back to me and said she was nearby so she'd drop off the keys - hurrah! I finally got in, made a note to always have credit on my phone when I may have to phone taxis (02 ate my credit when I was in France, they're evil!) and now you'd think I was going to sit down for a minute and relax but no oh no, I have to revise for a law exam tomorrow.

What does the karma have against me? See, this is what happens when I try to be like other students and find a part-time job to be able to further indulge my cravings of fun, fun and fun until the next loan instalment.

I do not like this day.
