I'm really looking forward to a well earned rest over the summer and an opportunity to relax (and stop biting my nails, and regarding sleeping, sunbathing and reading girly websites as official productive activities). However, I also feel a little bit sad, for we are now moving onto the last stage of a journey that has changed our lives so much, in so many incredible ways.

So *holds glass of water up (I still have one more exam left...)* here's to us; the next tax-paying, work-hating, prozac-taking, colleague-cursing, ample-drinking, money-driven generation. Cheers!

All my love,

And parents who take "please respect my privacy and let me study in peace" to mean "please open my bedroom door, come in, put your hand on my shoulder and give me a lecture about how important it is to eat fish at a critical time like this". It's funny how it took them four months to notice I didn't eat meat anymore, and a little longer to notice I've gone off fish as well.

Also, there's about three hairdressers on every street (make that five for Liverpool), how come none of them can do a decent job at cutting my bloody fringe?! Gaaaah!!!!!

 Comments

The wedding

On saturday I went to a wedding; it was a lovely night. The bride looked stunning, the place was very nicely decorated, everyone was having a good time and the newlyweds looked sooo happy, it was beautiful.

People spend so much money on this one special day. I don't have anything against that, and I think that when you look back you want to remember your wedding as an amazing day, so every penny is worth it. But I've never really wanted to have a traditional wedding, I'd rather get married on a beach with a few friends and family, and then have cocktails and canapés while dancing to live music in the moonlight and a fire. I've had this thought since I was a little girl - special, I know.

So I'm glad me and my boyfriend got completely smashed and confessed that we want to get married one day and, as it turns out, neither of us is keen on a church wedding. We have faith and beliefs and we're religious, but we think the church is fabricated.

I wish I could remember what else I said to him, hopefully nothing as bad as admitting that I'm allergic to cats, after having been around his cat for nearly six months. I love the kitty, what am I gonna do?! A little rash and an itch never hurt anyone.

Hope your bank holiday weekend was as good as mine, Jimmy.

I'll probably spend a lot of my earnings on shoes. With my first paycheck, I'm gonna buy a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. These are my new pair (before the last ones I bought):

Same height as a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent Cinema perfume:

Or a highlighter:

Or a Lancome Juicy Tube:

But higher than a whiskey flask! So surely, more productive, I think.

Sorry about the girlieness of this entry. These shoes are one of those things I mentioned previously that look good but are pure evil. And tomorrow, I will be wearing them all day. God help me.

"There is a close relationship between the "haha" of humor and the "aha" of discovery."

Brilliant! It's things like that that make me laugh/keep me awake during revision.

It's awful. Right now I am mad at myself for choosing a module I'm finding really hard. I thought I was doing well and I was enjoying it until I got my mid-term grade back. That's the worst, when you've worked hard and you're proud of yourself and then DOOM! not such a good grade. I used to be a legal secretary and I know all this law stuff, or at least I thought I did. I'm so unmotivated now; I'm making the effort, but I'm scared that it won't be enough again. What happens then? I'm such a kid, being scared upsets me a lot.

This situation reminds me of a bit of a song from Jesus Christ Superstar, called Gethsemane. It goes like this:

"Then, I was inspired
Now, I'm sad and tired
Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations
Tried for three years, seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?"

Random, I know, but that's how I feel.

Anyway, time to go back to the studies. I hate law, it was made to be broken, not analyzed - like Shakespeare. Read and enjoy, don't analyze. The whole attitude behind exams is obsolete. Life is simple, so why do people make it complicated for themselves? And more to the point, why do they complicate it for other people?

 Comments

Flower patterns and shiny balls are not nice

So I got up early(ish), completely shattered because my sleeping pattern went mad over the Easter holidays, got ready and was about to leave the house, but then decided to check my e-mails first. Ah-ha! E-mail from Paula Ferrington, lecture's been cancelled. The first thing I did was phone my friend Rachel and let her know. Then I decided to use the free time to do some revision; and then I had to go to town to find a dress for a wedding I'm going to in two weeks. It was impossible - they're either too expensive for my student budget, or they look like the 70s vomited all over them - seriously, what's with all the horrible patterns, silky textures and unflattering shapes? The world's gone mad.

Also, I became a victim of my own clan, i.e. marketeers, and bought lots of goodies because they looked pretty. To be fair, I did need them, but I'm so glad they look pretty; it makes me feel girly and fabulous.

Get well soon Jimmy!

Most of the time the product inside the pretty package isn't very good, but in some cases it is just as good as it looks. For example, Benefit make-up, Thorntons' chocolates and cookies and cream vodka, which actually reminds me of a funny conversation I had with my boyfriend last week...

Me: This bottle looks so pretty, it kinda compliments the drink.
Mike: You're prettier, they should make bottles like you.
Me: Awwww that's so sweet.
*Mike ponders for a minute*
Me: What are you thinking about?
Mike: A 5' 2'' bottle of vodka.

And that reminds me, last night Mike was out with his mates and he mentioned to one of them, Phil Daley, that I'm doing an entrepreneurship module at uni. Apparently Mike also asked Phil if he knew my lecturer, and Phil said "Oh yeah I know Jimmy Hill!"

See, you're popular Jimmy. Such a small world!

But people?? I decided to eat my sister's cereal and noticed a bunch of little people, most of them legless (I'm guessing the fish are piranhas), swimming in the milk...

They taste lovely and they're packed with vitamins; but it's slightly weird. Maybe they're supposed to be mermaids. Either that or Steven Spielberg is now working for Kellogg's.

I always wonder how much "theory from the literature" is enough, and try to restrict my opinion to a minimum because it's not usually received in a good way, so I just keep going until it sounds like I've read enough - and believe me, I have. More than enough, I'm a walking entrepreneurship encyclopedia. If only I actually bothered to put my ideas into practice, I'd be rich by now.

It's funny how little things can motivate you over night. Last night when I was trying to sleep, while trying to dodge horrible thoughts of work I have to do, I remembered something really sweet that my boyfriend said. He said I was pretty, funny and smart. That was it, it suddenly hit me - if I don't get on with the work, "smart" will no longer be a trait and "lazy" will replace it. Also, every time I'm getting dressed and I see my tattoo in the mirror (it says "alis volat propriis" - "she flies with her own wings"), it reminds me that I made a promise to myself that I'd never let anyone live my life, I'd always stand up for what I believe in. I believe I can achieve my goals, so no amount of entertainment, emotional scars, sun or cocktails will stop me from getting there. For the time being, anyway!

Funny, yes (although probably not in the most common sense of the word). Pretty, on occasion. Smart, most definitely.

 Comments

Diaries aren't always egotistical

One of my marketing teachers once said that blogs and diaries are usually kept by self-obsessed people, or indeed megalomaniacs. In my case, it's just that I prefer keeping my memories online than on a paper diary. Partly because I type faster than I write (and it looks nicer), but also because I hid my diary so well that I can't find it. The number of visitors on blogs has been increasing a lot over the past months, which proves that people like gossip, especially when it involves other people's misfortunes.

So that's why I chose to keep this diary online! Just thought I'd explain my choice, in case it made me look lazy. I'm not lazy, I'm just creative.

"You see things and you say, 'Why?', but I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why not?'" - George Bernard Shaw

Good night.

 Comments

Head on the Clouds

Whenever I have exams or deadlines coming up I tend to start thinking about backup plans in case uni goes terribly wrong. I work really hard, but I think that's just a way of procrastinating - let's be honest, we all do it. My current backup plan is to be a crepe seller in Paris (I'd probably be my own best customer though). So I started thinking about how I could advertise my crepe empire and here's the best idea I came up with:

Rather fetching eh! But wait, there's more!

See, I was born to be a marketeer.

Now that's just what I needed before exam season!
*To start with, family and friends, they'll always be there for me

*Nuno Valente (Everton player, I was his children's interpreter for a while when they moved over here)

*My tattooists, they know me and the story behind all my tattoos

*The restaurant owners in The Italian Kitchen, Valparaiso and Algarve, all dad's mates

*My boyfriend works for the HMRC, and my dad's friend is a big boss there

*Portia, my hairdresser for many years, she always gives me a discount

*My bank manager, who keeps telling me I can't have a bigger overdraft - wise man.

*All the lawyers at JST Lawyers, I worked there and they'll get me out of trouble should I ever end up in court, which is highly unlikely since I'm such a nice person

*Lyndell W., I met her on a forum for people who had tumours on their parotid glands, she lives in California and would help me out if I needed anything while I was there

*My mom's great uncle was a very famous writer, I'm sure I can throw that in and it'll come in useful, in Portugal only though.

*And most recently, Fall Out Boy. I met them last night at their gig, so surely that counts!

That's about it for now, I'm sure I'll think of some more people and come back to update this.

So I got up, had breakfast and went for a walk in the park. Popped into the shop to get a magazine on the way, and the mail man stank of sweat. Carried on walking, got to the park entrance and there were two scary looking men walking out, and a mafia looking man shouting on his phone in a very threatening voice. Didn't see another soul, so carried on walking. Ah, the kids playground, guards nearby! Lovely, I thought, find a bench and sit down. First bench, there's a psycopath biting his nails like mental. Second bench, there's a tramp sleeping on it. Third bench, too close to these two weirdos. Next bench, covered in yoghurt. Next, seems ok, in the middle of the field with the sun shining. So I sat down, then a couple walked past with their two pitbulls, I could feel one of them staring at me but I made no eye contact. Ten minutes later the wind was so cold that I had to get up and walk again. Finally, near home, there were three pitbulls playing in the front yard and trying really hard to get out the gate, probably to eat me. This time I really thought it was the end of me, but thankfully I got home safe.

Clearly, students are meant to be fat and unhealthy and going against this will bring severe consequences.

 Comments

The library's my vision of hell

And so is the gym. Or anywhere packed with students, really. I had to walk up and down the library for an hour until someone decided to leave, and I ran for the computer like a crazy woman, in my head shouting "It's miiiiiiine!!!"

I'm tired. Not just tired as in I haven't slept much because there's too much work to do, but tired as in fed up and mentally tired; and right now my stamina is close to non-existant. The summer holidays are approaching but just thinking about next year, and how hard and exhausting it's gonna be, makes me wanna flee to Paris and become a crepe seller, or a writer. Writing is my first passion, marketing is my backup plan because let's face it, writing can be a very hard career and I appreciate my little luxuries. I try really hard and I feel lucky to be at uni, I just hope all this hard work will be worth it when I get my grades.

I'm ready to go home now. Reaaally wish I could.

 Comments

Mother's Day

Another one of those commercial holidays, an opportunity for companies to make millions off the public. It's not that I refuse to give in and buy my mom a present, it's just that this time I am incredibly skint - I hate that part of being a student! So I went out and bought lots of little things myself and made her breakfast in bed with croissants, marmalade, cappuccino, wafer sticks, juice, and flowers (tulips, apparently, which I didn't know until she said "the tulips smell gorgeous"). I'm glad she liked the thoughtful gesture, sometimes people forget you love them so it's nice to remind them every now and then.

Hope you're having a good time in America Jimmy, I'm not jealous at all!

I couldn't agree more; and I really hate it when teachers treat pupils like soldiers in school, I mean, no one ever did anything better by having someone screaming in their ear and humiliating them in front of everyone. Take my parents for example; when my mom used to take me driving ("used to" as in she's too scared after the 50mph u-turn incident) she was patient and told me slowly step by step what to do. My dad, on the other hand, slapped my leg and yelled "the clutch Monica, the clutch!!!" every time I let the car die. The subjects I'm good at are the ones where the teacher is good and makes learning as pleasant an experience as possible. I don't want to mention names, but there are lecturers I want to punch in the face - we're adults, we're here because we want to and we're paying a lot of money for our education, we don't want to be treated with less respect than we deserve.

Anyway, time to go home, been in the library for a long time (extra brownie points for me!).

Until next time!

Today I had another one and the place is near my house, which means that it is too close to get public transport but too far to walk. So I decided to get a taxi there to avoid a repeat of crazy-looking-lady at a previous interview. The manager knows my friends because they work there and the interview went really well. On the way home I thought I'd jump on the first taxi that drove past but to my delight none did until I was round the corner from my house, which means that I walked miles in stilettos..."Why would you wear stilettos to an interview, Monica?", one might ask. Good question, and for once I can justify my actions; I'm short and being taller makes me feel more confident, which is necessary at job interviews. Then, to make my day just a little bit better, I noticed I didn't have my house keys and started to panic when I remembered that no one else would be in until the evening. I couldn't bare the thought of walking anymore, so I popped into the McDonald's in the corner because sadly it was the only place where I could use the toilet, eat and rest. Have I mentioned that I'm a vegetarian? The last time I went to McDonald's was nearly a year ago after I had an operation, I could hardly open my mouth so the thought of a BigMac was very appealing, obviously. Anyway, after texting everyone my mom finally got back to me and said she was nearby so she'd drop off the keys - hurrah! I finally got in, made a note to always have credit on my phone when I may have to phone taxis (02 ate my credit when I was in France, they're evil!) and now you'd think I was going to sit down for a minute and relax but no oh no, I have to revise for a law exam tomorrow.

What does the karma have against me? See, this is what happens when I try to be like other students and find a part-time job to be able to further indulge my cravings of fun, fun and fun until the next loan instalment.

I do not like this day.

 Comments

J'adore Paris!

So I got back from Paris last night; nonetheless I went to lectures today, exhausted and suffering from crêpe withdrawal symptoms - you've got to love me Jimmy!

I thought it'd be useful to mention my trip on my diary because the French could teach everyone a lesson on Customer Services, they really make an effort to please the customers. Vendors are polite and kind, the streets are immaculate, cocktails come with pretty decorations and "merci" is never forgotten. Not exactly the same as "pound, love" when you order a portion of chips at the greasiest place ever where the vendor handles money and food with the same filthy hands. I know it's the capital, but the service was great. Oh, and happy hour starts at 4pm.

Au revoir!

Hate office clothes, it's like dressing up for Halloween. The horrible weather doesn't make you feel less awkward either; I got there and there was no place to fix myself so I had to sit there with mad hair and Alice Cooper eyes whilst attempting to sound enthusiastic about the prospect of working. It was one of those quick interviews where you can tell that they just want to see what you look like, because you sound alright on paper but they don't want ugly people working in their swanky restaurant. Oh well. It's so good to be back home in baggy jeans and a hoody, those trousers and that shirt were as uncomfortable as trying to eat spaghetti bolognese on a first date - not that I'd know from experience, I have more common sense than that.

And the cherry on top of the cake is...on the way home I got a text off my sister saying "there's a photo of you on the school prospectus! I'll bring one home to show you!" Lovely. Just what I wanted to hear.

 Comments

And you say marketing is just common sense

I went to see The Sounds at the Barfly last night and they were awesome. However, waiting in the rain and freezing cold for ages wasn't. I had a rather dashing boyfriend to share body heat with while we waited in the queue for tickets, but it made me wonder why they didn't let us in sooner, or at least at 7:30pm like it'd been announced. Didn't they think that if they'd opened the doors earlier the bar would've made more money? Or that they could easily exploit the goth-wannabe-kids who spend daddy's money on alcohol just to look cool? I reckon I could give that manager a little lesson on good marketing. Or a smack on the head with my umbrella - oh wait, I didn't have one!!

In contrast, lastminute.com gets a big thumbs up for caring for their customers. They sent me an e-mail asking if I'd already packed for my trip to Paris and gave me lots of tips on where to go for entertainment, food, local attractions, shopping and even some useful phrases. I'm gonna murder their language, but that's a different story. It's always been one of my dreams to go to Paris, I love making dreams come true!

When I grow up, I want to be Maja Ivarsson.

This time I'm being somewhat productive though; decided to take a test to find out whether I'm entrepreneur material. I wasn't very amused by the result; it said I'm "hired hand". So I took another test and this is what I got:

"The prospect of your success in starting a business is questionable. You have some deficiencies that might out-shadow your good traits. If you want to go on with it, be sure to use all the persistence you have. You are going to face some tough times on the way."

After getting a little frustrated, I decided to look further into this because I remember that, when Jimmy was talking about entrepreneurial characteristics in a lecture, I identified myself with most of them. I have friends who'll do things just for the sake of it, but I'd rather be creative and have fun whilst doing them; I'll still get the job done but it makes it more bareable. So here's what I found:

*An eye for opportunity - check. However, too lazy to do anything about it.

*Independence: - check. Lots of it. I like being independent and I wouldn't have it any other way.

*An appetite for hard work - humm, uncheck.

*Self-confidence - ish.

*Discipline - check. I will make one annoying mother one day.

*Judgment- check.

*Ability to accept change - check. Change can be good and if it isn't, you change it so that it is.

*Make stress work for them - check. Living on the edge, I like it.

*Need to achieve - check. I'm not a snob, but I have standards.

*Focus on profits - check. Endless amounts of Jimmy Choo shoes and Chloé bags, focus is definitely something that won't go amiss.

See, I could be an entrepreneur if I wanted to. I've got it in me, I just haven't manifested it yet.

 Comments

Which world leader are you?

So I took a test to see which world leader I resemble. My mom was Hitler - seriously, I'm not kidding. But then she took it again and this time she was Che Guevara, so maybe this test needs reevaluating.

Apparently I'm Bill Clinton! And apparently that's a good thing. I'd rather be the Dalai Lama, but I suppose Bill was a very powerful man so I wouldn't mind being like him. It'd be too much pressure running a country though and as I've said before I don't like stress, which is why I wouldn't want to be an entrepreneur. I would like to be the first nice woman (don't like the word female) Prime Minister though, that'd be cool. The world would be a much better place if I ran it, along with my confidants.

Maybe there's something about Bill and Monicas after all.

To me, entrepreneurs are workaholics who only think about succeeding and exceeding their limits; and they have no time for families or job unrelated entertainment for their firms are their babies. Of course I didn’t say that out loud in a room with hundreds of people, I’m far too shy to do that. And I’m still traumatized from when Julia Hodgson asked about stereotypes between men and women and I said men are less hygienic than women. I’m surprised I’m still alive after that, good thing this is The University of Liverpool and the scally ratio is low, otherwise I would’ve ended up with a purple eye.

Anyway, I’m not judging, people should do whatever they want with their lives. My priorities are all wrong but I’m happy so as long as I’m not hurting anyone with my choices, that’s all that matters. I’d love to be part of a well-known huge enterprise, but I wouldn’t like to have my own business, I appreciate free time far too much. I’m not lazy, I’m just a free spirit, or a hippie if we were in the 70s. Or, to put it simpler, I’m more Karl Marx than Carl Icahn.
